9 Best Student Money Saving Tips That Will Actually Save You So Much Money!

This post is giving you the best student money saving tips, every student should be implementing. The great thing about these money saving tips? They are universal and can apply to everyone. Whether you are in the UK, the US, Spain, Canada, Uganda, or anywhere these tips are just for you! PS. if you are not a student, these tips are also for you.

    student money saving tips

Hello! Money, mulla, Ps, dollar bills, whatever you want to call it we are talking all about money today. Specifically how to save money as a student. These student money saving tips apply to both employed and unemployed students so there are tips in here for everyone.

This post was all about Student Money Saving Tips!

    Student Money Saving Tips

Whether you want to save extra pennies or pounds, it does not matter, saving money is saving money. Every single penny adds up so whatever you can save is great.

    1. Pay EVERYTHING You Can With Cash

Psychologically, it is much harder to part with physical money than digital money. The thought of spending 50 on your debit card is like so what? However, handing over 50 in cash? No way. This will help you save a lot more money because you think about the purchase a bit more and it also helps with minimalism.

Another benefit of paying with cash is that you can control your spending a bit better. This brings us on to the next tip.

    2. Best Student Money Saving Tips: Make a BUDGET

It sounds so gross and so long but trust me, making a budget will save you SO much money. I can personally vouch for this tip as it is saving me 100s a month.

Budgeting is when you simply allocate money to certain categories for a month, so you know exactly how much money you have and where it is allowed to go. Sticking to a budget requires a different level of strength but having an overview of your money is highly important and the first step to understanding your finances and saving some money.

Now to track your budget you can print out these printables we have on the shop, or you ca go super simple and just use some pen and paper, like below.

Be realistic with your budget and try to stick to it. This will help you save so much and stop spending money on things you do not need.

    3. Create some Sinking Funds!

A Sinking Fund is a pot of money you use for savings. After you create your budget, and you have some money for savings (or money left over from your budget) you can organise this money into pots. For example, hair, car, holiday, fun money.

You can keep track of this physically with cash or electronically in an app, like Monzo. However it is so much more effective to create sinking funds with cash so you can SEE your money! After all we know its much harder to spend money when it is physical.

With cash, you can have separate envelopes like these that you bring out with you and whatever you buy you take money out from each envelope. For example, if you go to H&M, you pay with the cash in the clothes envelope. Once this money is gone, you cannot spend any more money on clothes.

This is possible to do electronically, too. I used and still use Monzo to help me budget. Within Monzo they have pre-set budgeting categories that you put a value on for every month. You can change these goals for every month and whenever you spend it automatically categorizes it into your budget.

Click here for Monzo UK and get £5 when you sign up! click here for Monzo US (not aff.)

    4. Save Your Change

If you pay with cash, put all of your change that you get to the nearest pound/ dollar into savings.

For example, if you buy something that is 5.50 and pay with 10, keep 4 but put 0.5 into savings. This little method works so well.

I am bringing Monzo into it again because Monzo allows you to create pots where you can select an option that whatever money you spend they round it up to the nearest pound, and save the change in this pot. In just a few months i managed to save 50 bucks! 60p here, 60p there doesn’t seem like much per transaction but it really does add up!

    5. Go for the Cheaper Alternatives

I cannot stress this enough. As we learnt in this 15 Things You Need to Know Before Starting University post, food can be so expensive. As a student, we do not need Tescos Finest because guess what? Aldi and Lidl taste just as good and most of the time, even better! Save yourself a bunch of money and start looking in cheaper places.

    6. Rinse out Deals and Offers – CashBack App

This will save you so much money! I am going to sound like a crazy couponing lady here but if you know you will buy something like washing up powder or coffee more than once, stock up whilst they are on offer.

Online shopping is a big thing and guess what? You can get cashback for all of your spending. Not only can you do this via your bank but if you sign up to an app like TopCashback and QuidCo, you can save money on each of your online spends.

I recommend QuidCo for insurance (eg. car, phone etc.) Sign up here for a free £15!

    7. Only Take Out Money You WANT To Spend

Do not take your card out with you on a night out. Only take the money you want to spend. Save yourself from buying the whole group 2 rounds of jagerbombs and keep your savings SAFE! Bring out a twenty and keep your spending at that.

    8. Sell the Things You Do NOT Need

Maybe not a money saving tip, but it is a money gaining tip. As humans, we outgrow things and that is okay. Do you know what is not okay? Hoarding things 😂. I am so guilty of this, especially with clothes and books. I made £80 recently selling a bunch of books on Facebook Marketplace. This is great because no fees are required so you keep all of your money. Every penny that you earn from this should stay in an account you do not touch.

    9. Have Saving Goals!

    college student money saving tips

This is so important because it really motivates you to save money.

Start off small and dont overwhelm yourself. Let’s say you have never saved before and don’t have a huge budget, start off with a goal of £200 for the year, see how you do month by month as you work to understand your finances and spending habits and go from there.

There we have it! 9 Vital Student Money Saving Tips you need to implement that will save you big bucks!

  • How To Be A Straight A Student | 9 Best Straight A Study Tips!

How To Be A Straight A Student | 9 Best Straight A Study Tips!

This guide is letting you in on how to be a straight A student!

how to be a straight a student

Getting an A is hard but straight As, across the board, even harder! Luckily for you, you are in the right place. Here is how to be a straight A student from someone who was one!

How to be a Straight A Student

1 | Show up to every single one of your lessons

As most lessons and lectures are online at the moment, it’s easy to just be present but no be present but also, it’s easy to just not show up!

It is so important, however, for you to be there. Your teacher/ lecturer can drop valuable information during these times that you wouldn’t know if you don’t show up.

For example, they could be explaining exam technique, exam solutions etc. that can really help you. For example, my lecturer used to go over a bunch of physical chemistry questions and how to solve them in the way he wanted…. and one of them actually came up in the exam.

JUST SHOW UP AND BE PRESENT

2 | Stay Up To Date With Your Notes

All of these tips are equally important but this one probably just a little bit more. Why? Having up-to date notes means you are not left behind when it comes to the next lecture, having no idea what is going on.

If you write up your notes on the day/ week of the lecture, you can consolidate your knowledge, and effectively be prepared for the next lecture and actually understand what is going on. Thus, effectively learning and understanding more of what you are learning- the key for getting straight As.

    3 | Further Reading

Do it. Read a lot up on the subject you are studying. The more background information you have, the more you can apply it, and the more in depth understanding you have of it.

This is a perfect tip for those studying humanities because the more background info you have and apply into your projects, the more marks you get!

how to be a straight a student tips

4 | Past Papers and Mark Schemes

Understanding the way examiners mark and the way they ask questions is probably the biggest secret on how to be a straight A student. The more past papers you do, the more experience you have in answering questions. This leads to a deeper understanding of how to specifically answer questions to get more marks and secure that A.

Past papers also inform you on topics you need to study more and those you have a good understanding of.

5| Print Out and Learn Your Syllabus

Your syllabus is probably the most overlooked thing EVER! Why? I will never know because it tells you every single thing you need to know for your exam. Work smarter (but also hard) and learn what you actually NEED to know for the exam.

    6| Ask Questions

If you do not understand something, ask questions to make sure you do understand it. At the end of the day, it’s your education and you will only be doing yourself a disservice if you don’t ask.

    7 | Make A Work Timetable

Throughout your journey as a student you should have a work timetable to try and stick to.

Every single day allocate yourself topics and subjects to research/ revise (depending on what time of year it is.) This ensures you give each subject equal attention and no subject is left behind.

If you want to know more about scheduling your day, check out this post.

8 | Use your Free Periods Wisely

If you are American, a free period is time throughout the school day where you have no lessons (maybe study hall?) Use these frees to do some work! Do a past paper, plan an essay… just do it. It’s also beneficial and you be better prepared and secure that A.

    9 | Relax

How to become a straight A student? Relax. You need to give yourself some time to rest and allow everything to sink in. Doing too much everyday can result into burnout, which will leave you unproductive for weeks!

Have a break, have a kitkat, whatever you do, just put the books down for an hour and do whatever you want!

Most of these meals may sounds super expensive but remember you can buy things and cook them in bulk so they stretch out to loads of meals. You can also substitute more pricier things for cheaper items (like, no one needs Himalayan salt.)

    Roasted Red Pepper Pesto Pasta

You wouldn’t think with a tounge-twister name like this, that this meal was actually a cheap student meal ideas. However, this pasta is super cheap and easy to make and has been rated 5 stars!

It’s time to spice up the standard pasta and try this one out from Crunch & Cream

    Chicken Fajitas

This recipe from Berry&Maple requires only 20 minutes for you to make it and the ingredients are very cheap. This particular recipe requires one chicken breast and some herbs and seasoning to make the sauce. Ofcourse you can double this and batch cook a bunch of fajitas (yum!)

    Veggie and Non-Veggie Stuffed Peppers

These stuffed peppers from the Modern Proper are delicious! Honestly, they are such a big winner and you can easily make extra for the following day.

I usually make mince meat stuffed peppers and look how delicious they look (pre-oven lol)

    cheap student meals uk

Tuna Pasta Salad with Pine Nuts

This recipe from The Cook Report looks so tasty! Tuna can be quite expensive when you think that one can is around 1.5 however, with recipes like this that one can, can stretch to a couple of delicious tuna pasta salad meals. YUM.

    Jacket Potato!

We have a lot of American readers here on TCP, so I am going to say do not knock this, until you try it! Jacket potatoes are a super cheap and yet filling student meal idea you do not not want to try!

I have mine with tuna a lot but the cheapest option is probably baked beans and The Kittchen shows you just how to make one!

    Meat Chilli

Probably one of my most used cheap student meal ideas! This is so quick and easy to make. I used to batch cook my chilli and then defrost it throughout the week with some pasta or rice!

This five ingredient is super easy to make, i’d definitely recommend this recipe from Pip and Ebby!

The mince itself you could get for less that £4 but that would feed me for about 4 meals!

    Veggie Chilli

How good does this vegetarian chilli, from Chelsea’s Messy Apron, look? As it is made with all veggies it is super cheap, lasts quite long and again, you can freeze portions and defrost them whenever you like!

Another Pesto Pasta but this time, Carrots

    cheap student meals vegetarian

This is a TCP original again 😉 I had this all of the time and its a great option for cheap student meals!

This costs probably around £1 per portion

The vegetables are frozen and they are £1 for a big bag, pasta is about £1 for a big bag, and the pesto is less than £1 to buy!

    1. Start cooking your pasta of choice, here I chose fuseli
    2. Whilst that cooks, cut up your desired veggies and cook those in a pan with some olive oil, onion powder and garlic salt.
    3. Drain your pasta, add the veggies in with the cooked pasta, stir, add some pesto you bought from Aldi for 79p, stir again.
    4. Add some galic salt, serve and enjoy!

    Curried Chickpeas and Spinach

This Budget Bytes recipe looks so delicious and great for people on a budget! The chickpeas give you protein, the spinach gives you some iron and good vitamins, and the whole recipe itself gives you tasty goodness!

    Pitta Bread Pizza

This is, by far, one of my favourite things to cook on a budget.

All you need is some pitta bread, tomato puree, cheese and some pizza toppings.

    1. Start off, by turning on your grill and allowing that to heat up.
    2. I always opt for veggies so I fry some onions, peppers and mushrooms in a pan.
    3. Whilst thats frying, I put some tomato puree on the pitta bread and let that warm up on the grill for a few minutes (about 2-3 minutes.)
    4. Once the veggies are soft, I put them onto the pitta bread, along with some cheese.
    5. Continue to grill for a few more mintes and voila. Tasty.

A Golden Delicious Cheese & Ham Toastie

Does this even need an explanation? Sometimes you just crave a toastie. You can also take out the ham and put things like aubergine in it (don’t knock it till you try it.) Or you can just have a plain grilled cheese like this one from The Modern Proper.

Add some soup to your toasty!

Nothing beats a nice warm soup, on a cold night. Soups are great because you can batch make them for super cheap and freeze them!

There we go, those were some delicious and easy to make, cheap student meals, that will keep you full whilst on a budget!

  • January Bullet Journal Setup | Minimalist Bullet Journal Ideas

January Bullet Journal Setup | Minimalist Bullet Journal Ideas

This post is showcasing some great, functional (and in my opinion, minimalist) bullet journal ideas. Yes, it’s a January bullet journal setup!

    january bullet journal setup

As said in my 2021 bullet journal setup, I am so pleased it is January! January brings new goals, a fresh slate and a great brand new bullet journal (whoop whoop 🥳). I am so excited for my 2021 bullet journal as I am going to get as creative as I can, experimenting with a bunch of different things.

I started off slow with my January bullet journal setup and actually decided to make it pretty minimalist as I did not want to bombard myself with a bunch of things too quickly, at first. Overall, I love the way it turned out and I am currently loving the simplicity and the use of only a few colours.

    Now, let’s get into it…..

    January Bullet Journal Setup Essentials

Here is exactly what I used for these minimalist bullet journal spreads, and the great thing is: I only used four items!

    Archer & Olive Journal

Honestly, I purchased this purely for the cover and to see what all of the fuss is about. I’ve been using it for two days now and can’t really tell any difference (page wise) between this and the STM (my beloved.)

With A&O, you have to check if they supply to your country here, as they don’t ship internationally.

STM however are much cheaper and just as good in my opinion.

    Kraft Paper

I bought this kraft paper from Amazon and really love the colour of it. I’ve seen some kraft papers that are too dark/ too light but this is just perfect. I’ve loved using this in my set up and January spreads and its a great medium to work with!

    Sakura Micron Fineliners

Holy cow, I love these and they are so cheap, too! I bought them as a little stocking filler for myself and they really haven’t disappointed. I highly recommend these.

    Uniball Signo White Gel Pen

I do really like this pen, but I don’t know if it’s just my specific pen but the ink sometimes struggles to come out of the pen, as you will see in the set up.

    Bullet Journal Setup 2021

    January Bullet Journal Cover Page

    bullet journal 2021 setup january

I definitely need to work on my floral designs but I do enjoy this monthly cover page. Usually, I have big, bold and perhaps sometimes OTT cover pages. This has been such a nice change and I absolutely love using the kraft paper and micron pens!

    January Dashboard

    january 2021 bullet journal setup

Fun fact, I don’t track any to-dos in my bullet journal, apart from some main monthly ones, which is why I only have a few points. I’ve got my six blogposts to write and some trackers and this really does work well especially if you use a separate planner, like I do.

    LOVE IT.

    January Books Read

    january bullet journal setup 2021

If you cannot tell already, I am so obsessed with covering a corner of a page with kraft paper. I love the way it looks and it just adds a great dimension to that page.

I do have a separate bookshelf of books I’ve read at the beginning of my bullet journal but in this section I give the book a rating and a few lines of text as a review.

Thats my January bullet journal setup! If you liked it definitely check out my 2021 setup and these posts below:

  • How To Be More Productive | 13 Genius Productivity Tips To Get Things Done

How To Be More Productive | 13 Genius Productivity Tips To Get Things Done

This post is all about how to be more productive! We are providing you with some genius productivity tips and tricks to help you get things done!

    how to be more productive

As we start a new year, a new exam season, or a new project we want to be able to get things done in a timely manner and smash our goals. It can be quite difficult to do this. But guess what? It is possible with the productivity tips given in this post.

Whether your goal is weeks away, days away or at the end of the year, whether your task is big or small, implementing these genius productivity tips will help you get there!

Here’s how to be more productive!

    How To Be More Productive

I am just going to put a disclaimer in before we start. You do not need to do every single one of these tips to be productive. Productivity is determined by you. If making your bed is productive for you, that’s great! If going on a run at 7am in the morning and doing all of your chores is productive, that’s also great.

    Set more than one alarm

Start your day right and actually get up when you are supposed to. I set about five alarms in the morning to get myself up on time. This helps you snooze whilst also snoozing less, if that makes sense! I highly recommend doing this if you struggle waking up in the morning

Set out all of the things you will need in the morning the night before

Setting out your clothes, the things you make your breakfast and coffee with, and your makeup up and shower things will help streamline your morning and enable a stress free start to your day.

Make a daily to-do list in the morning

As you sit down with your morning hot drink and breakfast, make a to-do list of thing you need to get done in that day. This could be looking at all of the appointments, meetings, or calls you have and pencilling them in as well as other tasks.

Making a to-do list will allow your productivity to skyrocket as it is a visual tool that will inspire you to get things done!

    Set Small Manageable Goals

Be realistic, do not expect to complete a whole draft of your thesis in one day. Setting yourself small manageable tasks will help you be more productive as you are actually able to complete them!

    Meal Prep!

This is such a massive time-saver. You do not even have to think about what’s for lunch and dinner because you already have it!

I know meal prepping is quite hard but if you go onto Pinterest and type in meal prep ideas, there’s 1000s of posts!

    Clean Up As You Go

Whilst you go about your daily routine make sure to clean up after yourself. You may spend a few minutes doing this but its better spending a few minutes here and there instead of 30 minutes at the end of the day.

Want More Organisation And Productivity Posts? You got it:

    Go over your to-do list

how to be more productive student

Being productive is NOT completing the whole of your to-do list. It is doing what YOU can, that YOU deem as productive.

Going over your to-do list throughout the day will help you understand the pace you work at. This makes it easier to set yourself taks in the future as you will roughly know how long they will take. This is also good as you can amend daily tasks if you know there is no way you are going to get it done.

    Review your goals regularly

Reviewing you goals will help you be more productive because you are mentally reminding yourself of your goals. Subconsciously, you will therefore work harder towards your goals, making you achieve them.

Rank Your Tasks in Order of Importance

Rank the things you need to do in the day in order of importance, and do the most important things first. This will automatically make you feel more productive once the more important task is checked off.

    Complete Small Tasks in Chunks

Set aside about an hour a day to get small tasks done. This could be sending out some emails, folding your laundry, and washing up dishes. All three tasks can be done within the space of an hour. These power hours are amazing to just tick off loads of things that need to be done.

Go For A Walk in the Middle of The Day

Taking breaks is crucial for high productivity! Break up your day and go for a walk during lunch. This will help clear your head and allow your brain to refresh and rejuvinate for the second part of your day.

Clear Your Workspace at the End of the Day

I cannot stress how important this task is. At the end of the day, clear your desk off all thing you used that day such as, coffee mugs, plates, pieces of paper, books etc. as you do not want to carry them over with you to the new day. It is so annoying waking up in the morning and having to clear your desk before you have to work!

    Treat Yo’ Self

That’s right! You have got to give yourself regular breaks when being productive. As said before, being productive is not doing every single thing on your to-do list.

Treat yourself for tasks you complete. For example, once I write this post I am going to have some chocolate. Not only does this motivate you but it actually works to get things done!

That was HOW TO BE PRODUCTIVE! If you have any productivity tips, make sure to comment them below!

    Bullet Journal Supplies

Now I have already written a post on ‘Must Have Bullet Journal Supplies’ where I list absolute favourites from the bullet journal community. If you want to check that out, click here.

As said before this post is for supplies you will use mostly every single time you make a bullet journal spread.

So, without further ado, let’s jump right in.

    1. Staedtler Triplus Fineliners

These bad boys have been a staple in the bullet journal community since I started journalling back in 2016! I bought my first pack in late 2016 and they JUST started running out on me.

They’re mostly used for drawing, lettering and outlining. Mostly every single one of my spreads contains a triplus fineliner. However, these are not good for colouring in so I wouldn’t attempt it.

Zebra Mildliners are highlighter gold. Wanna know why? They’re not actually highlighters, they have mid brightness so they’re actually quite mild. The mildliners come in around 20+ colours, each unique and sought after.

They are dual tip, with one end being a highlighter nib and the other a marker nib. I personally aboslutely love these pens and I use them everyday whether or not I am journalling.

If you are to purchase any highlighters, mildliners should be it!

    3. A Black Tombow Dual Brush Pen

If you do not have the hundreds of whatever your currency is to spend on Tombows, like me, I recommend just purchasing the black one. Why? It is the best dual brush pen. The marker nib is thick enough to title with and thin enough to make a border. The brush tip is also such high quality.

I use my tombow for headings and words I know I can calligraphy.

    4. Hethrone Dual Brush Pens

Everyone who knows me knows how much I love these dual brush pens. Compared to Tombows they are super super cheap, around 20-30 bucks for a pack of 72!

The brush nib does frey after long periods of use but I find they are still usable.

I use these in mostly every single spread and I highly recommend them.

    5. A Ruler

I don’t know why but this simple little tool is always overlooked. Granted sometimes I love to go freehand with my borders but in some spreads a ruler is a must. Save yourself from frantically trying to find something small and thin enough to use a ruler and just buy one!
