The Number 1 Ultimate Guide on How To Start A Bullet Journal

This post is all about how to start a bullet journal you will love!

how to start a bullet journal

A bullet journal can be an overwhelming planner to start. Why? There is so much information and pictures out there so when you’re thinking about how to start a bullet journal, you do not even know where to begin! I am here to change that for you!

I started bullet journalling all the way back in 2016, which is crazy, and I now share bullet journaling ideas, and tips and tricks to help beginners and all other levels with their bullet journals.

This post is going to go step by step, from your first page to the beginnings of your monthly and weekly layouts, to all different list and tracker ideas. This is truly the perfect guide on how to start a bullet journal for beginners!

So get out your journal and your supplies, save this post for future reference, and let’s get into how to start your bullet journal so it is you best planner yet!

This post is all about how to start a bullet journal!

What Makes a Bullet Journal Different To A Planner?

Now bullet journaling is something you need to stick with for it to really work. Traditionally a bullet journal is a personalised planner that you can make yours. It is different to your traditional planner because you can customise it however you would like.

The original bullet journal key system focused on lists- read more about it here. What I am going to show you in the post is what bullet journaling has developed into: weeklies, monthlies, lists and a few more bits.

And remember you can make your journal as simple or as artsy as you like!

Benefits of a Bullet Journal – Why Should You Start

There are many advantages to having a bullet journal and here they are:

    1. Organisation

Bullet journaling can keep you so organised as you can create a page for anything and in any way you like for you and your system.

    2. Creativity

Journaling is magical creative outlet. You can let your creativity run free and make any spread you would like! This post is going to give you a bunch of bullet journal ideas that can help spark your creativity

    3. Get It Done

When you physically write things down, you are more likely to accomplish what you need to do. Apparently, writing in blue pen also helps you remember your to-do list. Having a physical list of to-dos and goals also holds you accountable so you’re more likely to do them.

    4. Sentimentality

As bullet journals are what you make of them, you can keep yours as a memory keepsake forever. I have kept all of mine as they are a great way to see what you were doing a few years a go!

How To Start A Bullet Journal

how to start a bullet journal for beginners

I am splitting this post up into two sections: bullet journal essentials and general bullet journal layout and bullet journal examples

For this post, I have decided to make it as easy as possible to follow. I will therefore not be showing any crazy layout ideas or very artistic bullet journal spreads. But please don’t fret, this post is going to contain so much bullet journal inspiration and bullet journal spread ideas to help you on how to start a bullet journal.

    Bullet Journal Supplies

It can be quite daunting starting something new and thinking you are unprepared so you never actually start it. It’s the same with bullet journalling. However, with bullet journalling you only really NEED a journal and a pen; it’s what you do with them that makes a bullet journal. Having said that, bullet journaling has taken considerable steps up in terms of essentials and basics.

Here are my essential ‘How to Start a Bullet Journal Supplies’ – and thankfully these will not break your bank account!

    1. Journals

how to start a bullet journal tumblr

I have used many brands of bullet journals and from the five brands that I have used I recommend Leuchtturm1917 and Scribbles That Matter.

Both come with over 150 pages. The main difference between the two, for me, is the colour of the pages. The Leuchtturm has ivory pages with darker dot-grid, whereas STM has brighter pages with lighter dot-grid.

Out of the two, my favourite is the STM journal! Yes, it has less pages than the Leuchtturm but the brighter pages is a winner for me.

    2. Pens

how to start a bullet journal buzzfeed

Please don’t think you need ALOT of money on the tombow dual brush pens right off of the bat, you really do not. Here are some great pens I use and they are all very affordable and great quality!

Everyone who knows me and reads my bullet journal posts knows how much I love my Hethrone Dual Brush pens. I cannot and will not stop talking about these brush pens. For such an amazing price you get a great quality brush pen (well 72 of them!)

I don’t think the Triplus Fineliners need a big introduction as everyone knows how great these pens are. If you don’t, definitely try them out!

I cannot rave enough about the brilliance that is the Sakura Sigma Micron fineliner pens. These pens are used across the board: from artists, to students, to me! They come in various nib sizes and are instrumental in every single spread I ever make- even for my university notes!

As per absolute essentials, these are what will get you buy for a few months until you get a bit more comfortable in your style/ bullet journal needs.

Bullet Journal Order and Bullet Journal Spread Ideas

For ease of use and to bring up the less confusion, I am going to show you the bullet journal spread ideas in a traditional bullet journal order.

    1. Bullet Journal Index

An index is something everybody starts but hardly anyone finishes. To tell you the truth, I only used my index for about three months in my first bujo and I have not used it since. However most bullet journals come with an index right at the beginning so thats usually the first page!

    2. Bullet Journal Key

After an index you should put the key. The bullet journal key is what you use for your to-do lists. This comes straight after the index on a blank page.

how to start a bullet journal inspiration

    3. Bullet Journal Title Page

Next up we have the ‘start’ of your journal; the title page. This can be as simple or as complex as you would like. As you can see both options are great.

    @VK_BULLETJOURNAL

The next few sections before monthly and weekly spreads is completely optional and you do not need to have trackers and collection pages. However, they are great things to put into your journal to help you stay organised and ontop of things.

    6. Miscellaneous

After some of your yearly trackers, it is great to put in some collection and goal pages. These can include: quaterly goals, yearly goals, series to watch, a master shopping list. This list is endless. These are put in your journal to keep you organised. Here are a few visual examples:

Monthly and weekly spreads might possibly be the best organisation tool in your bullet journal. These spreads are THE spreads where you look at every single day. Here are few examples, with great organisation layouts:

    @MeekyMooJournals

How cute is this spread? This is probably one of my favourite savings tracker bullet journal spread ideas. I love the fact that it uses orange slices and paperclip aeroplanes- it makes it so personalisable. Now I don’t know if Florida is associated with oranges, but it would be such a good idea if you use something from the place you are going to to track the amounts.

I would keep it simple because it would be difficult to draw so many and also colour so many in.

    8. A Craft Paper Stand Out Savings Tracker!

    Christmas Bullet Journal Cover Ideas

Here are some absolutely beautiful Christmas December bullet journal ideas ranging from super simple, I can do this in 20 minutes, to okay, I have been transported to a winter wonderland!

    Driving Home for Christmas

christmas bullet journal cover christmas tree
    Source

I see this spread and feel so happy because it reminds me of driving home and being all cosy! I think the trickiest part of this (aside from the title) would actually be the Christmas tree, so if you are going to recreate this spread, maybe twist your journal around instead of attempting to draw a sideways Christmas tree!

Want to recreate this spread? Kim used some Crayola Supertips and how awesome does it look? I also love the little reindeer paperclip.

    Christmas Bullet Journal Ideas Gonks

    christmas bullet journal ideas cover
    @CreativeMindsCoffeeGrinds

I am obsessed with this Christmas cover idea, not only because I love Christmas gonks but because it is actually super simple to recreate! I actually think the hardest decision will be what pattern/ colours to use!

Want to recreate this exact spread? Tory used some Tombow brush pens and how awesome does it look?

    RECREATE THIS SPREAD:

    Christmas Wreath Bullet Journal Cover

    cute christmas bullet journal ideas

What an absolute beautiful wreath from PaperyThoughts! If you love line work and have the patience ad artistic ability to be able to make a wreath without giving up, this christmas bullet journal idea is seriously cute. I can imagine this with a super simplistic theme throughout the month, as well as a super colourful one! Nevertheless, this December cover idea is gorgeous.

Now, if this wreath is a bit more complicated than you would like, continue scrolling for a more simplistic style wreath you can copy.

    Candy Cane Christmas Cover Idea!

    christmas bullet journal cover
    source!

This Christmas bullet journal idea spread from Charlotte looks good enough to be on a Christmas card! I am obsessed with the ribbon and the pairing of two PINK candy canes – just great!

    Christmas Bauble Cover Idea

    christmas bullet journal cover ideas

I cannot get over how cute this Christmas cover idea is! Not only is it actually super simple but you can customise it however you would like. The doodles are fairly simple and you can change up the colours to fit whatever these you would like.

The use of washi-tape also allows more page space to be covered, so no heavy artistic ability is required!

    Christmas twinkly lights

    christmas bullet journal cover
    source

Now if you are leaning into more of the simple christmas bullet journal ideas, this is the cover for you! You only need three colours, but thinking about it, you can totally just go monochromatic with black and white.

One thing I do highly recommend for this post is a set of black fineliners! These Micron pens are amazing and come in 6 different thicknesses so you do the title, the wire, and the lights with on set of pens!

  • How To Deal with Homesickness at University

How To Deal with Homesickness at University

This post is all about helping you deal with homesickness at university as wobble week is real.

woman having coffee and using laptop in bed
Photo by Vlada Karpovich on Pexels.com

Wobble week. Have you heard of it before? I hadn’t heard of it until my first year of University where my lecturer mentioned homesickness. Apparently, during a specific week in November you are psychologically more homesick than any other time and you know what? He was telling the truth. With a plethora of restrictions in place due to the current situation, you’re more likely to get homesick sooner and it’s really not a nice feeling, especially because it’s not easy jumping on the train home anymore…. here’s how to deal with it.

How To Deal With Homesickness At University

A lot of these are easier said than done points, so if you are really struggling please speak to your university about it ; they have structures in place to support you and your mental health.

These points listed below are all things you can do for yourself that will ease the homesickness!

Make your space as homely and cosy as possible

    source: pintsizedbeauty

One of the main reasons why we miss home is because and its obvious, we are not at home. It’s really important for you to create a space that reminds you of home. Stick some pictures up in your room, make your room as cosy as possible so you can relax and be all homely!

For more tips on making your uni room nice and cosy, click here.

    Facetime people from home

Keep watering your home roots and speak to people from home regularly! I used to facetime my mum and little brother loads during my first year at university and it really helped!

You are not alone in this, talk to your university friends

This is such an important point because it’s true. Most students go through periods of homesickness and loneliness. It’s comforting to know you are not alone so talk to your friends about it and you’ll start to feel a bit better.

    Need more University posts?

Do more activities with your housemates and friends

    netflix and chill
Photo by Ellie Burgin on Pexels.com

With current restrictions its difficult to meet up with people and grab a bit to eat. Engage with your friends, housemates and those inside your bubble and do some indoor activities together! You could have a movie night, a dinner party, pizza and puzzle nights. Do any activity to take your mind off of missing home.

For a great list of things to do indoors, click here.

    Write your feelings down

If you are not much of a talker, like myself, write your feelings down. It can be very therapeutic and extremely helpful for you to keep a journal of how you are feeling and dealing with things.

    Try a new hobby

Keep your brain occupied and try out something new! This could be embroidery, reading, cooking, drawing, anything that tickles your fancy.

If you would like to get into embroidery I bought this cool kit back in June and absolutely LOVE it!

There you have it! Implement some of these tips and tricks to help combat your homesickness at university!

11 Amazingly Cosy Bedroom Ideas You Will Love

These are the 11 hygge inspired amazingly cosy bedroom ideas, that are totally to *sleep* for!

Is there anything more appealing than relaxing in a cosy room? Your room is your place to relax and unwind at the day so making it as cosy as possible is a must. Having shared a small bedroom for the first *twenty-two* years of my life, I am used to making the most out of my space. Therefore, whether you have a small or big bedroom, there are loads of cosy bedroom ideas in here for you.

    Let’s get cosy…

    1 | CANDLES

Now this one is bit obvious, candles are a staple cosy piece. They add warmth and instantly make a room calm and cosy when lit. I love lighting my candles in the evening whilst I finish off some work or just have them on whilst reading… it really creates a nice, cosy mood. Recently, I have taken to having them on whilst working from home and its quite nice.

However, I am quite picky with my candles. I used to buy my candles from all over the place but I absolutely hate it when candles tunnel despite burning for 4hours + (Aldi candles are the worst at this!) I do still buy some from Primark as you can see in the picture because they burn quite quickly and I have them on for a while so no tunnelling occurs. The only candles I know which don’t tunnel are my Yankee Candles and I love them so much. These are the scents that will make your room nice and cosy:

If you would like cheaper scents, definitely check out Dunelm and Primark!

    2 | Wax Melts

These are so gorgeous! If I know I’m not going to be burning my candle for long enough, I use my wax melt. My wax melt burner is from Poundland (definitely check them out if you are in the market for some cheap ones.) I like this burner but I don’t love it as there are way prettier ones elsewhere. The one below is one I am thinking of purchasing this payday as it will throw really pretty light patterns on the wall. These make your room smell lovely INSTANTLY, which is great. They also use tea-lights so I think you could get away with using them in halls or rentals.

    3 | Wall Plug Ins!

If you are not allowed any sort of open flame in your bedrooms or you just do not like candles, definitely think about investing in a wall plug in. They come in so many scents, it’s just about picking the one that’s most appealing and calming to you. This way you are still achieving the cosy vibes.

    4 | Chunky / Fleecey Throws

One way to instantly make your room more cosy is introducing throws and blankets to your bed or on a chair. These throws exude warmth and can be taken with you to the living room or be wrapped around you during your wfh days. I absolutely love wrapping myself up in my throw whilst watching netflix or reading during the middle of the day when it’s not acceptable to get back into bed.

    5 | Pillows

    source: pintsizedbeauty

The phrase I associate with pillows is: the more the merrier. Really, the more pillow you have the more cosy and inviting your room is. Look how amazingly cosy Lily’s bed looks!

I love purchasing my pillows from supermarkets and Primark!

The great thing about the cosy bedroom ideas I have mentioned so far is that the only space they require is on your bed and a little space on your desk/ windowsill.

    6 | Art Prints

Having shared a room for most of my life, I was never able to put anything onto the walls because my sister had to like it, too and we are very different. Therefore, nothing went up on the walls. However, now, I am still stuck in that void where I have nothing on my walls. That is about to change, though. I have so many ideas where I want to put things up in my room and I KNOW it will make my room automatically more cosy.

I’m going to be printing out a bunch of prints from my Etsy shop (LazyPeachDesigns) so definitely check those out if you’re in the market for some prints.

Here are some more posts you may enjoy:

    7 | Warm lights

    source

To add some cosy ambience, stick up some staple warm fairy lights around your space. A perfect solution to not have to put up any prints or photos and cover a blank wall is to get some fairy light wall lights. We had some of these in our university living room and they made everything immensely cosy and nice.

    8 | Books!

I could not write a post about cosiness and miss out on some books. I don’t know what it is about books but they automatically make a space more cosy and personal. Having a book shelf or maybe even a small stack of books, or even one book on your nightstand will automatically make your room more cosy.

9 | Comfy dressing gown/ Robe on the door

I recently bought a ‘over the door hook’ system and I love it! I had one of these in all of my uni bedrooms but I only got one for my own bedroom this year. Hanging up some cosy robes and jumpers will add a personal and cosy feel to your space.

    10| An aesthetic mug/ pot

A lovely mug/ plant pot (with a nice plant) will again add a cosy feel to your room and make it looked lovely a lived in. I love putting some pens/ bookmarks into my plant pots and mugs. You can even put your makeup brushes/ diffuser into it.

    11 | An area rug

If you have wooden flooring, definitely invest in a rug that will make your room nice and cosy.

Be careful with the sizing of your rug; don’t buy too small or too big as it will look really weird.

  • Things To Do This Fall: Indoors, Outdoors and Digital-Free!

Things To Do This Fall: Indoors, Outdoors and Digital-Free!

This post is all about the best things to do this fall! Whether you’re staying in or going out, we have you covered!

As the weather becomes colder and crispier, we find that prolonged outdoor activities just aren’t viable anymore (ain’t nobody going for a beach day in October in the UK.) Therefore, we need some other things do both indoors and outdoors, to keep us occupied. This post is going to consist of fun things you can do both in and out of the house this autumn, whilst also keeping safe by maintaining social distancing.

I have categorised these activities into two categories, so you can click whichever you would like:

    – In the House Things to do this Fall

Out of the House Things to do this Fall

Things to do this Fall: Outdoors

    Take a woodland walk

Have no woods near you? You can drive somewhere near by or even take a walk in your local park and see the beautiful trees and the autumn leaves.

Read a book in your favourite cafe

Nothing screams autumn aesthetic as reading in a cafe does. I love getting a warm drink and sitting down and escaping in a good book for a couple of hours.

    Go book shopping

Again, very on brand for autumn but book shopping whilst it’s gloomy outside doesn’t compare to anything. It’s lovely being surrounded by books and warmth whilst its cold outside.

If you want a few book recommendations, click here.

    Go on a bike ride

On a day where it’s not so rainy, going on a bike ride is perfect and peaceful.

Go and have a Sunday Roast at your local pub

Now, I have never had a pub roast (which my friends’ ridicule me for) but I’ve heard they are spectacular and hearty… just what we need in the autumn.

    Visit some museums!

Visiting museums is such an autumn mood. Go to your local history museum, science museum; they are so cool (and free!)

    Go To a Plant Nursery

Winter plants and shrubs are so underrated. I would highly recommend just going to a garden centre/ plant nursery and just looking at all of the beautiful flowers.

    Search for Acorns and Pinecones

I don’t know if I’m in the complete wrong over here but I don’t think I have ever seen acorns in London but pinecones are abundant in the autumn winter/ time and i know some people love putting them around the house.

Take a Day trip to the Nearest City

We spend our Summers driving to the beach and spend our weekends in Autumn doing the same thing over and over again. Take one day (or two, if you fancy it) and visit a city close to you, one that you have never visited before.

Go and Watch a Movie at Your Local Cinema

The cinema industry has taken such a big hit recently and it would be great to go down to your local cinema and watch a movie!

    Adventure Park, Anyone?

Adventure parks are so much fun, go in the autumn to avoid the big queues and the sweltering heat!

    Try a new Cuisine

Use this fall to branch out with your tastebuds. I recently tried Brazilian food and absolutely loved it!

Things to do this Fall: Indoors

    A puzzle

I did this during lockdown and immensely enjoyed it. It may have been because I was watching money heist as I did it but it was very relaxing and it meant I was not on my phone!

    A self-care session

This is so important! Take some time out of your day or hey, dedicate a whole day to pampering yourself, meditating, painting your nails, just have some ‘you’ time.

    Bake something!

I love baking during the autumn; my favourite thing to bake is apple pie. I think this year I might try baking some hazelnut cookies or maybe even a raspberry pie.

    Start Embroidery

This is something I am going to be doing! I bought this exact embroidery kit from Amazon and I have already embroidered onto a tote bag and a pencil case. This is a super nice and relaxing thing to do and it also enables you to pick up a new skill.

    Journal!

Journalling is such a great way to express yourself and for me its a form of therapy. If you love writing or want to get into journalling definitely try it.

    Get Crafty

Let your creativity flow! There’s so many arts and crafts options out there; you can make some cards, an autumn wreath, a brand new doormat, it’s all up to you. I think I am going to try my hand at making some cards for the upcoming festive season.

    Start Reading!

I am a strong believer that if you do not like reading, you just haven’t found the right books and genres to read. Reading is a great form of escapism as whilst you’re physically sitting on your bed you could be mentally living crazy adventures such as, fighting dragons, solving a murder or even going on a date with someone unexpected.

Start of small and find a genre that interests you the most. A great starting place is Goodreads, where books are rated and reviewed by people in the thousands!

    Board game Night

When was the last time you played a good boardgame? I can’t remember mine either, but I have so many great childhood memories of me playing them and it’d be lovely to create more memories. How cool does Shot in the Dark look? It’s a great quiz game but an unorthodox version!

    Complete a Paint By Numbers

These kits are everywhere and they look awesome! They come with a big painting, paints and brushes where each number is assigned to a paint. This looks very therapeutic and can be enjoyed with a glass of wine on a chilly night. Look how gorgeous this Paris one is.

That was things to do this fall both indoors and outdoors!

    Entry Way Florals

I believe the florals in this photo are definitely real foliage. I would personally not have any live foliage, instead I would opt for these fake ones. They’re great because you can stick them anywhere; in your entryway, on the base of your fireplace or in the middle of your main table.

These indoor trees which are super autumnal

Bring the outdoors indoors with these amazing maple tree lights! If you have the space, i think these would be a fantastic addition to your fall decor. The mini ones are also super lovely for the fireplace or mantlepiece.

These white pumpkins around your fireplace

    pinteres

I am obsessed with these pumpkins! I’ve seen people put them all over their house but my favourite is around the fireplace or on top of radiator covers! They are so versatile and personalisable as you can either leave them as they are or decorate them yourself.

    Spooktacular Porch/ Entryway

What screams halloween/ fall better than a giant lantern? We have a silver mirrored lantern in our entryway and it always gets compliments.

Switch Up Your Pillows and Throws

This is such an effective and cheap way to decorate your home for fall. Switching up your pillows and throws will automatically change the look and feel of your room, making it more autumnal and cozy.

    These Maple Leaf Twinkling Lights

These twinkling maple leaf lights are a great addition to any living space. If you don’t have your own place, decorating your bedroom/ dorm room for fall with these will instantly add an autumnal feel to your room.
